Implantable Collamer Lens
ICL is a permanent yet removable lens-based refractive surgery for patients with myopia, hyperopia and/or astigmatism to improve their vision without correction and reduce their reliance on glasses and contact lenses without removing any corneal tissue.
What are the benefits of ICL?
- The lens is made with Collamer biocompatible material that works in harmony with the natural eye
- Corrects refractive errors as an alternative to corneal based refractive surgery.
- Corrects up to -18 diopters of myopia, +10 diopters of hyperopia and 6 diopters of astigmatism
- Quick recovery with excellent vision day and night postoperatively
- ICL procedure does not induce dry eyes compared to corneal based laser surgery
- UV protection
- Return back to normal daily life activities in 2 weeks
How is ICL performed?
ICL is an additive lens based technology where a lens is placed directly behind the iris and in front of the natural crystalline lens. This position facilitates focusing the light properly onto the retina to create clear distance vision.
ICL procedure is a quick outpatient procedure that takes approximately 15 minutes in each eye and is performed in 3 steps after administering numbing and dilating drops. First, after sterile preparation, a speculum is placed to hold the eyelid open to prevent blinking throughout the procedure then the surgeon creates a small opening at the edge of the cornea. Second, the lens is folded and inserted through the small opening using a special instrument. Third, once the lens is inserted, the surgeon makes necessary adjustments to position the lens properly in the eye. After that, the surgery is completed by administering eye drops to prevent any infection or inflammation postoperatively.
